Leisure Education
What is Leisure Education?
The Leisure Education Program enables people to develop awareness and confidence in the use of their leisure time. The self knowledge and skills gained through leisure pursuits can then be applied to other aspects of their lives. It is a great experience for people who:
-
have a disability
-
are between the ages of 18 and 65
-
are a recipient of Home Care services
-
are socially isolated in their homes
-
are interested in forming friendships and community activities
-
have the potential and willingness to make decisions for themselves
-
are willing to make a commitment to the aims and goals of the program
Benefits
Individualized Programming
The Program is directed by the consumer and done at his/her own pace. The consumer assesses his/her own needs and interests with the assistance of the Consultant and is involved in the ongoing evaluation of the success of their short term objectives and their choice of long term goals.
Friendship/Networking
Facilitating the development of friendship from natural supports and acquaintances such as neighbors, fellow volunteers, etc. is a key component of the program.
Peer Support
An invaluable aspect of the program is the involvement of Leisure Buddies. These are volunteers who offer peer support through telephone calls, visits, participate in events or attend courses with the consumer.
